Light, space and sea – Living with a view
A masterpiece consisting of light, material and movement
Toledano + Architects created a fascinating duplex apartment which embodies the power of the ocean from the former entrance hall of a villa in the style of the Basque architecture of the 1930s. The entire living area is oriented toward the large window, providing a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Biarritz lighthouse.
Flowing shapes that are inspired by the ocean
The architecture reflects the movement of the waves: Flowing shapes dominate the interior design, and combine the past with the present. A sophisticated material mix consisting of French oak, brushed aluminum, stainless steel and Travertine creates a harmonious balance between warm naturalness and cool elegance. The carefully restored herringbone parquet flooring preserves the historic character of the villa.
A floating gallery for private retreats
A gallery level was incorporated via a freestanding metal structure, which accommodates the private retreat consisting of a bedroom, an office and a bathroom.
Kitchen on demand: Elegance meets functionality
The lower living area, on the other hand, is a homage to the endlessness of the sea. The architects deliberately avoided visual interference here – even the kitchen remains concealed. It disappears seamlessly into the wall behind elegant folding/slide-in doors, and can be opened with a single operation when required – for uninterrupted culinary enjoyment with a view of the expanse of the ocean.
